KG Korean Charcoal BBQ Buffet @ Da Men Mall, USJ
The moment we entered KG Korean Charcoal BBQ restaurant, I had a deja vu. The place felt oddly similar to Kilo Grill. Wait a minute.. KG.. Kilo Grill, are they the same? Even the staff didn’t know.
After clarifying with the owner who happened to be around, then only we knew that KG is owned by a separate company which is a collaboration between Pavilion and Kilo Grill.
Kilo Grill was one of my top rated buffet restaurants in 2015, so it’s only fair we had high hopes for KG as well. Long story short, if you feel Publika is too far or the reservation process (not sure if it’s still 1 week) is a turn off, then KG will be your answer. The prices for both restaurants are similar and you get pretty much the same menu offerings.
As soon as you are seated, a few beautiful ladies will explain the concept behind the restaurant and food ordering process. After that, you will be recommended to start with the sets, eg. seafood set (shown above), meat set or skewer set.
If this is your first time here, the seafood set is not a bad choice to begin the meal. Everything included in the set is recommended except for the squid, not because it’s bad or whatsoever but because it’s bland.
The scallops are probably the best part of the meal. Fresh, cooks quick and the soy based marinade is just great. We had multiple orders of this.
Second best is a tie between the marinated pork and horse mackerel. The pork slices (available in belly, loin, bacon, jowl) are just delicious while the horse mackerel is as good as what you get at the normal Japanese restaurants.
Oysters are good but they are not for raw consumption, you must grill them until the liquid inside boils.
Prawns are fresh and sweet, but the shell tend to stick to the flesh afer being grilled which makes eating a hassle. This was the only gripe we had.
Besides the items listed in the menu, there are also trays of frozen seafood (mostly shellfish), cooked food, vegetables and soup. To be honest we didn’t give a lot of attention to this section. The flower crabs are worth a shot though.
Overall it was an enjoyable dinner and we felt our money was well spent here. As long as you set your expectations straight I don’t think you’d go home disappointed. After all, KG is an ‘eat all you can’ restaurant so you can’t expect the quality of the food to be fantastic.
There are a couple of pros to pick KG over Kilo Grill such as no time limit, more food choices and more family/group dining friendly due to more space. Not to mention the ventilation here is much better as well so your clothes won’t smell as bad later.
