A team of researchers in South Africa found that wild elephants sleep approximately 2 hours a day. These biggest land animals also take a trip nearly two days without sleep as part of their day-to-day routine.
Inning accordance with Sleep Preview, sort of evidence also declared that larger mammals, like African elephants, manage to oversleep just a short time. Other groups of researchers carried out research studies formerly on elephant sleep. These were done in a cage setting or didn't identify precisely a rest from sleep.
Paul Manger from University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, and his team conducted a keen research study on how wild animals sleep. They followed 2 female adult African elephants wandering freely in Chobe National forest, Botswana, for 35 days.
The researchers implanted the animals with an actiwatch, which is a type of fitness and wellness tracker Fitbit. They position the device in the trunk of the African elephants to trace their sleep pattern exactly.
The group positioned a GPS collar with a gyroscope tied around their necks. This is to keep in mind the place and time the African elephants rest to sleep.
"We reasoned that measuring the activity of the trunk, the most mobile and active appendage of the elephant would be important, making the sensible assumption that if the trunk is still for five minutes or more, the elephant is most likely to be asleep," Manger said.
The 2 African elephants invested just a mean of two hours sleep each day according to the findings released in the journal PLOS ONE. This rest time occurred usually during early hours of the early morning.
The African elephants likewise operated without sleep for up to 46 hours, the scientists discovered. They even walked cross countries around 30 kilometers during those restless times. The elephants walked away may be due to the fact that of disturbances such as lions or poachers.
