He thought he had a free court-appointed attorney. Then he got a bill for $10,000.

The United States Constitution states people too bad to manage a lawyer ought to be designated one spent for by taxpayers. And Unterburger– who said he was mistakenly accused— was told he would be. He was amazed when, years later, an expense showed up stating he owed thousands of dollars in lawyers’ costs.

“If I ‘d understood they were going to charge me,” he said, “I would have spent more time screening attorneys.”

In powder.

Unterburger was jailed for having less than a gram of an illegal drug and brought previously a North Texas court.
