He thought he had a free court-appointed attorney. Then he got a bill for $10,000.

The United States Constitution states people too bad to manage a lawyer ought to be designated one spent for by taxpayers. And Unterburger-- who said he was mistakenly accused-- was told he would be. He was amazed when, years later, an expense showed up stating he owed thousands of dollars in lawyers' costs.

"If I 'd understood they were going to charge me," he said, "I would have spent more time screening attorneys."

In powder.

Unterburger was jailed for having less than a gram of an illegal drug and brought previously a North Texas court.
